GRAMIN for women

GRAMIN was established for empowering women, in the rural area in general and socially and economically weaker section of the society in particular. We, therefore, emphasized in working for the rural women in poverty driven, low-status, particularly illiterate women and children from the remote and rural areas where there are lack of protective environment are the worst sufferer of this trafficking.

Poverty driven, low-status, particularly illiterate women and children from the remote and rural areas where there are lack of protective environment are the worst sufferer of this materialistic attitude. Well organized international crime group often treats this section of the society as a commodity. And surprisingly India, where respect and regards towards the fair sex is an age old cherished heritage, has emerged as the source, destination and transit for both in-country and cross-boarder trafficking. Trafficking of women and children for commercial sexual exploitation has gradually increasing in an alarming rate even in our areas.

The problem is challenging because of its myriad complexity and variation. It is, therefore, a challenge before the country to stop this inhuman practice and everybody should stand together hand-in-hand to face it. The solution lies in a multi-sectored comprehensive approach comprising-

  1. Prevention of the problem and if trafficked then
  2. Rescue, and
  3. Rehabilitation of the victim and their reintegration and reunion into the family and society

After working of our own effort for few years we applied for a project, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has formulated such a comprehensive scheme titled Ujjawala to be implemented through eligible organizations including NGOs. We are submitting a project proposal to The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt. of India through Social Welfare Dept., Govt of Assam for consideration and giving us an opportunity to work for the cause.

But rescue and rehabilitation of trafficked women requires our NGO to be recognized as a curative home which demands registration of our NGO under Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act, which we have applied. The PIMC for these activities headed by S.D.O.(C), Biswanath Sub-Division and co-chaired by S.P., Biswanath Police district have resolved to apply for this registration
In this manner, since its inception, GRAMIN has been relentlessly striving for the upliftment of the women of the nation. From providing a sustainable livelihood to social security, GRAMIN has been introducing novel projects and schemes for the women of under privileged and poverty striken sectors of the society.
Security, Safety and Health

In the last year GRAMIN concentrated more in social works than income generating programme, focusing on women and children. One such activity is working for the women and children living in vulnerable area having no or very weak social protection.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development has formulated such a comprehensive scheme titled Ujjawala for poverty driven, low-status, particularly illiterate women and children from the remote and rural areas from being trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation to be implemented through eligible organizations including NGOs. The main objective of the project is to prevent trafficking of women and children for commercial sexual exploitation by creating a protective environment against poverty driven women and girls falling prey to the merchant of human trafficking and ensuring a respectable position in the society for those who have already been a victim of crime by arranging a sustainable livelihood after rescuing them from the merchant of evils. Thus there are three components of the objective namely:

  1. Prevention
  2. Rescue, and
  3. Rehabilitation of the victim and their reintegration and reunion into the family and society
GRAMIN had also submitted a project to the Ministry of Women and Child Development for all the components. GRAMIN is fortunate enough to be awarded ‘prevention of trafficking’ component of the project. This is the first Central Govt. Scheme to be implemented by GRAMIN. For prevention the following sub-objectives were selected:

  1.  To generate awareness among people from all walks of life against inhumane practice
  2.  To involve the entire community in the drive against the malice
  3.  To organise the vulnerable section of the society into Self Help Group to defend themselves against the attempt of being fall prey to the trafficker.
  4.  To work for ensuring sustainable livelihood activity for the group and thereby empowering themselves against any attempt of being trafficked
Before starting the project we could not imagine that the problem is so acute in our first sphere of area of operation, that is, the Biswanath Sub-Division. On the preliminary base-line survey conducted in the sub-division we observed with great surprise that the ugly eyes of traffickers have scanned our area also and detected the most fragile areas for their operation. These areas are those with little or no social protective environment. The society is also indifferent to the problem partly because of the ignorance towards the problem and partly because of the multidimensional complexity of the problem which is more or less beyond their reach. Since the project was a community based its solution must also be through community involvement. We, therefore, decided to make it a community based programme where people that matters in society will be involved at different level for different activities to create an environment in the society where the victims would be accepted as members of the society and help them restart their life with respect and dignity.
