On a sunny Friday morning of December 1994,
three college teachers of a suburban city,
guided by the obligation of social-debt repayment,
were discussing the problem of eradication
of illiteracy from the locality with the Sub-Divisional
Officer (Civil) in his official residence.
All problems and hurdles that stand between
were discussed with the best possible remedial
measures to be under-taken. One such perennial
problem was acute poverty the rural people have
inherited. Tagged with it is the socio-cultural
condition of the people. The discussion revolved
round the point that poverty is the main cause
of all these- socio-cultural and economic condition
that arises from ignorance, illiteracy, so-on
and so-off. Hence without redressing this
main problem any attempt to do-away with other
subsidiary problems will only be too temporary
to make any impact on the people.
The group then decided to work for socio-economic
development of the people with the economic
agenda placed in the center place.
For this they choose the Self-Help-Group (SHG) platform
as an all-round and quick amelioration process.
Next few days were spent on giving concrete shape
to this and the blue-print for an NGO was finalized.
Thus came the auspicious day, 8th March,1995, of
formation of an NGO At that time the name of the
organization was GRAMIN VIKASH and later on it had
taken the shape of GRAMIN which is acronym of Agency
for Rural Income Generation and Management.
